Karaoke Top 10 List - The Girl Power Songs For Karaoke

INTRODUCTION

Whilst it’s absolutely fine for any gender to sing whatever they like, there are a few songs that we do associate with being a bit of a female power anthem. Whether it’s the vocal range, the lyrics of the fierce feminine sass of it all, here is TKC’s top 10 Girl Power selection.

10. Girls Just Want TO Have Fun - Cyndi Lauper

This song is synonymous with a girl’s night out. You can practically taste the prosecco when you hear it! This song was Cyndi Lauper’s first single as a solo artist, having formally been part of a group called ‘Blue Angel’ and it shot her to stardom.

This song can easily be turned into a group number if you and your friends fancy an upbeat little group number to make your night complete.

9. Respect – Aretha Franklin

In all honesty, any Aretha Franklin song could work on this list. The woman was incredible – a singer, songwriter, civil rights activist, and all-around badass lady. Aretha has such a powerful voice but

It’s been 50 years ago since this song first was released and yet it’s as much of a girl-power anthem as ever!

8. Fighter – Christina Aguilera

Granted this is a big song and you need to have some confidence with it, but it’s such an iconic song. Christina Aguilera wrote this song at the age of 21 whilst on tour and feeling a bit stifled by her record company at the time.

The song is an anthem for strong women everywhere that won’t be kept down.

7. I’m Every Woman- Chaka Khan

This song is literally about a strong woman who takes very good care of her man, supporting him and guiding him. The song is by absolute icon Chaka Khan, but did you know the original version has a 14-year-old Whitney Houston on backing vocals? It’s an undisputed power song and you can really get into it.

6. Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) – Beyonce

No Girl Power list would be complete without a Queen B. Whilst there is a huge amount of choice with Beyonce if we are talking about strong female vibes here, then we have to go with Single Ladies.

The great thing about this song is that the whole room will know it, most of the ladies will probably join in a bit for the chorus and the dance moves are super easy so you can add that to your performance.

5. New Rules – Dua Lipa

In this 2017 hit (yes it really was that long ago it came out) Dua Lipa teaches us the rules for trying to move on from an ex. We’ve all been there.

This one is a particularly good choice if one of your girls has just escaped some terrible relationship and you are reintroducing her to the single market. Dua lays down the law to a wicked tune – what’s not to love?

4. I’m Coming Out – Diana Ross

Well, as we all know, this song featured on Diana Ross’s biggest-selling solo album ever. This and Upside Down are mega hits. The song was actually written by a man, but that man is Nile Rogers and he is the king of 70’s Disco so we will allow it.

It’s a great song to celebrate a girl’s night out and it’s got so much funk that it will be hard for anyone to resist having a little boogie along with you.

3. I Will Survive – Gloria Gaynor

This is THE female-empowerment anthem and is about moving on after a bad relationship. It’s an iconic song for overcoming struggle and moving on to bigger, better things.

Gloria Gaynor is such a strong woman that she was in a back brace following six months in hospital whilst recording the song. The back injury didn’t slow Gloria down though and you can hear that power come through.

From a Karaoke standpoint, this is a fairly easy song to belt out after a few G& T’s to get you going!

2. 9 to 5 - Dolly Parton

Dolly Parton wrote this song for the film 9 to 5 (in which she also starred) about gender equality in the workplace. Whilst there is a cheeky tone to the song the message is really about fighting the stereotypes. Dolly is well versed in this as she spent the early days of her music career in the male-dominated world of country music, but being the absolute powerhouse she is Dolly made it to the top.

This song is a great choice for all you ambitious ladies out there and can easily become a duet as well.

1. Independent Woman Pt1 – Destiny’s Child

This song is a triple threat it’s got great lyrics, it was for the Charlies Angels film and is has Beyonce (yes she’s on here twice but it’s Beyonce!). Beyoncé came up with the song after having an argument with her boyfriend at the time. She thought to herself, “I don’t need a man, I’m independent,” and with that went into a studio with the aim to promote female independence.

The song is from the year 2000 and was the title song for the Charlies Angel’s film (the good one) which also showcased some bad-ass girls kicking butt.

As Destiny’s Child are a three-piece it’s such a great and empowering song for a group to do at Karaoke together.

Well, there you have it. Those are our top picks for fierce ladies to rock on the Mic next Karaoke night. We are giving Cardi B an honorable mention here as well, but due to the rather provocative nature of those lyrics, we advise caution! Need to read the room a bit there!
